Should I open an American bank account?

In principle, it is no problem to open a free student account at a bank as a foreign student in the USA.

However, there are now good alternatives that allow easy payment transactions without additional fees. Some European banks offer accounts with free credit cards with no additional transaction fees.
With the multi-currency account from WISE you get a credit card for free payments and withdrawals in the USA. You don't need an account at an US bank and your parents can easily transfer your pocket money to your new account.

Here you can create your account and pay no fee on the first 500€. s

Tip:
Even without a multi-currency account, your parents can use WISE. For example, to transfer semester fees to your new university at the best exchange rates and fees.
